Bonnet damage: update

Posted by Jon Evans 04/02/2003 at 17h15

The body shop has confirmed that the bonnet is beyond repair, so have submitted a quote to replace the bonnet and front grilles, and straighten the metal panel in front of the top of the radiator. The labour comes to £360, the paint and materials £155, and of course the parts need buying as well. I have sent the quote to my insurance company and I await their decision.

Oh no!

Posted by Jon Evans 30/01/2003 at 20h44

My car got hit on the way home from work this evening! Early indications are that I definitely need a new grille, and more than likely a new bonnet. I will know better when I see it in the light tomorrow morning.

Gear selector switch replacement

Posted by Jon Evans 20/01/2003 at 23h46

I carried out this repair ages ago. Although you could still select reverse (and all the other gears), my reversing lights didn’t work, and my passenger side rear view mirror didn’t dip.

Replacing the fuel filter is a fairly easy job requiring a minumum of tools. It will probably take you about an hour.

Squeaking steering wheel

Posted by Jon Evans 20/01/2003 at 23h11

Recently my steering wheel started squeaking while executing slow speed turns. The cause: old, hard grease on the slip ring for the horn contact. The fix: remove the wheel, clean up the old grease, apply new grease.

Infra-red keyfob self test mode

Posted by Jon Evans 20/01/2003 at 23h07

To test the transmit / receive LEDs built into the keyfob, point it at a reflective surface, about 10mm away, and hold down the “unlock” button. After blinking the LED a few times it will light up continuously to confirm that all is well. To verify that it really did do the test, try it again without pointing it at a surface (just point it into space somewhere), and the LED stays unlit after the initial blinking.

Replace the rear light cluster

Posted by Jon Evans 20/01/2003 at 23h02

My right rear light cluster has had a crack in it since I bought the car, and as I was getting some door lock parts from a breaker I took the chance to get a replacement light cluster in the same package. The light cluster cost me £30 from German Car Dismantlers and it was very straightforward to fit.
